Step 2: Reset Console

You may be able to unplug your Xbox 360 by running the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter program. When an error message appears on the screen, click on the D-pad as well as the A button on the controller and choose Troubleshoot.

Step 3: Download OSU1 (Offline System Update File)

You should always update your operating system without actually downloading it. If you wish to perform this, you’re going to need:

  • A Windows-powered computer with a USB port and an internet connection.
  • One USB stick with NTFS file system, with at least 6 GB of internal space.

Some flash drive manufacturers allow users to write to a file system based on FAT32, but if you want to use them, you will need to format them to use NTFS. If you format a flash drive like this, all the data on it should be deleted. You must first back up or copy files from any flash drive to another PC when you are about to change the directory structure of the drive. Find out how you can convert a USB flash drive to NTFS for your computer.

Connect the flash disk containing the updates to a USB port on the Xbox 360 console. When you insert the USB flash to power up your console, an OSU1 on your Xbox startup troubleshooter will become active. Use the D-pad and the A button to switch between ON and OFF for offline system updates. This will install the update from the files that are stored on a flash drive. When an update has been completed, the console will start up again, and you should be taken back to the Home screen. If the update is successful, your console should start working properly now.
