The styleref field should be the one whose numbering is referred to the field. In this case, it was Heading 1. If there are no headings in the document that have autonumbering, and if the style of the document is not used, then you will get a syntax error for the part that represents the heading number.
It seems that somehow, the field properties of the style name box have been corrupted. Right click on the title that is offending. Then select the edit field. In the field properties box, look for the caption, and choose that field. So, click OK.
Right-click on the field and select “update field” from the popup menu. If you press alt-f9 again, you will see the field value. Right-click the field, and select the option “Edit Field” from the popup menu. Select the new style that you would like to use in the text that is referenced.
